Last week I watched a theatrical dance performance by the Brazilian dance company, Grupo Corpo, at BAM. I was completely captivated by the choreography - the perfect synchrony, balance of chaos and stillness, their incredible physical strength, and the way the dancers moved with one another to form these beautiful, unexpected shapes. I couldn’t create a narrative for it nor did I know anything about their philosophy, and yet I was totally enthralled by the experience. I guess that’s the power of dance. Unlike theater, film, or the fine arts, it’s so ephemeral. My visual memory of the performance is so short, I could barely remember the first few acts by the time of the intermission. Instead, what stuck with me was how excited, curious, and awe-struck I felt the entire time I saw the dancers move. It’s inspired a new interest in dance performance and theory that I (hopefully) will get to explore further this winter!
